The FogGuru project funds the PhD programs of eight young and talented early-stage researchers — also known as The Gurus.
Paulo Souza comes from Brazil. He obtained his M.Sc. degree from the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul, and worked as a Big Data Engineer in marketing and later in the supply chain field. His PhD’s topic is “Fog computing roaming techniques.” Its objective is to design mechanisms to dynamically migrate applications within the Fog when the users move, and thus maintain optimal proximity between users and the applications serving them.
Hamidreza Arkian comes from Iran. He obtained his M.Sc. degree in the Information Technology Engineering from the University of Guilan. “During my Masters, I enjoyed working on the Vehicular Ad-hoc Networks and Vehicular Cloud, and I published several international papers in these areas.” His PhD’s topic is “Stream Processing Operator Placement.” Its objective is to design algorithms to decide on the placement of stream processing operators in a Fog computing environment.
Li (Lilly) Wu comes from China. She obtained her Master degree in Signal Processing in Information and Communication Engineering from Southeast University in April 2015. She worked with IBM as a Cloud Software Developer then Site Reliability Engineer. Her PhD topic is “Autonomous management optimization based on online anomaly detection.” The objective is to analyze vast amounts of monitoring data in order to detect performance and functional anomalies, identify their root causes, and automate remediation.
Mulugeta Ayalew Tamiru comes from Ethiopia. He obtained his Master’s degree in Cloud Computing and Services from the Universities of Rennes 1 and TU Berlin. His PhD topic, titled “Automatic Optimization of Autonomous Management Systems,” is broadly concerned about developing methods and algorithms to automatically configure and fine-tune various components of a resource management system and adapt if for use in a Fog Computing Environment.
Dimitrios Giouroukis comes from Greece. He obtained his B.Sc. from the University of Peloponnese and his M.Sc. from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. “Both of my theses have been published in academic conferences. The help of my supervisors has been tremendous in order to motivate me and guide me into an academic direction, so far.” His PhD’s topic is “Elasticity mechanisms for distributed stream processing under QoS constraints” which aims to investigate run-time scaling in various stream processing engines by varying the level of parallelism of currently executing programs, and to design a mechanism for automatic migration of operators.
Felipe Oliveira Guttierez comes from Brazil. He got his Master’s degree in Distributed System at Federal University of Bahia, and has contributed in the industry mainly by working in research teams related to high-performance computing, storage, and resource management in cloud computing. Felipe’s PhD subject is about the optimization of data stream frameworks in an environment under variable traffic conditions.
Davaadorj Battulga comes from Mongolia. He obtained his M.Sc. degree in the INHA University in South Korea. His PhD topic is on designing data pipelines for the processing of IoT-generated data on a fog computing infrastructure. The system will expose a set of APIs enabling the quick development and deployment of IoT-driven smart city services. “It is a PhD position where I can collaborate with and learn from the professionals, and sharpen both my industrial and academic skills. Also by participating in this project, I strongly believe that we can make an innovation in the Cloud computing field, and contribute to society.”
Mozhdeh Farhadi comes from Iran. She joined FogGuru because she wanted to be involved in challenging tasks and to experience working in an international context. Her PhD topic involves Blockchain and its relation to Fog computing. The objective is to provide a blueprint for innovative real-time IoT enabled services and applications running on top of fog computing infrastructure and validate this blueprint through the design and development of a service using it. “The exciting part about FogGuru is its mixture between academia and industry. The FogGuru students have the chance to learn how things are done in a European company, which might be different from their past experiences.”
